II. Personal Connection: A Journey from Childhood My story as a swayamsevak began in Meerut, echoing the experience of countless families for whom RSS is tradition and legacy. Every summer, I visited my grandparents; their homes buzzed with the discipline, joy, and camaraderie of regular shakhas. As a boy, I participated in exercises, patriotic song-singing, and neighborhood weekend parties — where mangoes and buttermilk flowed freely, and subtle lessons of unity were embedded in daily ritual.
RSS wasn’t popular in Lucknow where I lived, but the magnetism of its values drew me in. Every summer intensified my passion, pushing me to officially join shakhas and then absorb RSS articles and scriptures. The more I read, the more I realized RSS’s historic role in India’s independence, saving Hindu culture, and defending the nation in dark times.
Dr. Hedgewar’s wisdom that “Strength comes only through organization” resonated deeply: unity and discipline are the pillars on which the nation rises. Today, as RSS celebrates its monumental 100th anniversary, I look back with pride and gratitude. The Sangh’s vision is not just a relic of history but a living, breathing mission
that continues to organize over 57,000 shakhas across India, embodying grassroots service, patriotic devotion, and selfless social work.
III. RSS in the Struggle for India’s Soul: Protecting Against Enemies RSS was born out of colonial oppression, a cultural attack that fragmented society, fostered inferiority, and fueled division. Dr. Hedgewar foresaw the need for organizing Hindus — not just for freedom but enduring unity:
“Even if the British leave, unless the Hindus are organised as a powerful nation, where is the guarantee that we shall be able to protect our freedom?” — Dr. Hedgewar[1]
